On May the 1st Ben Cartwright will be embarking on Challenge to cycle from Lands End to John o Groats in 8 days along with 4 other cyclists, all in aid of Matlock Mencap where Ben has been a volunteer for the last 7 years. A fellow volunteer has kindly offered his valued support by driving along side the cyclists with a variety of spares and supplies onboard.
This gruelling adventure will endure a high level of physical and mental stamina along with self determination, covering over 900 miles and up to 140 miles a day. The challenge will be fuelled by the great support of fellow volunteers, family and friends and any kind donations will be greatly appreciated, to support a local charity. Every penny raised will go to the charity. Thankyou.
About Matlock Mencap
Matlock Mencap is a Thursday evening club and day trips out run for adults with learning disabilities founded in 1973. Many of the members have been with the charity since it was established. The late Duke of Devonshire was president until his death in 2004 and his son Andrew Morny Cavendish, 12 th Duke of Devonshire has now taken on the role. For many of the members this evening is the highlight of their week and gives a much needed respite for their carers and parents. All the staff are volunteers and work hard to create a warm family atmosphere. Many of the volunteers give up much more of their time fundraising at table top sales, and Rallys up and down the country. The Charity relies on its main fund raising event of the year the Darley Dale Transport & Country fair.
We cover a range of activities through the year from cricket and football in the summer on the playing fields and indoor activities such as table tennis, snooker and arts and crafts. The club also run occasional day trips out which have included visits to the Zoo, Pantomime and the Sea side.
The club is very special and we hope with the continued support and hard work of all of its volunteers and donations given it will remain the sole highlight of the week for our members for many years to come.
